Key highlights
Match exciting moment and key highlights from the today’s match India vs Australia 2nd Test Live from Adelaide Oval, Adelaide.
Who Said What
Pat Cummins: That’s a great week. We were far from the team we want to be in Perth but this was good. Good to get a few wickets. [On Starc] He is amazing. He has done it for over a decade. So I feel very lucky and privileged. [On Head] He loves batting here. The game could have gone either way when Head went out to bat but he shifted the momentum. [On bowling under lights] The main thing was the lead. It was a pretty good time to bowl as well. The ball does a bit more under lights but the big thing was getting a big lead. [On Boland] Scotty just fitted in straightaway, like he always does. He probes with every ball, top of off. Hopefully, Josh is back next week. But even then Scotty is unbelievable. [On Lyon bowling just one over] He will jump in the ice bath, he has had a big week.
Rohit Sharma: Disappointing week for us. We didn’t play well enough to win the game. Australia played better than us. There were times when we could have grabbed the opportunity but failed, which cost us the game. What we did in Perth was great but every game throws a new challenge. Looking forward to the next Test and we will see what we did well in Perth and in Brisbane too last time.
Travis Head is the Player of the Match: Nice to get some runs again. I felt like I was in good form. It’s a good dressing room to be in. Pat gives me great confidence. I felt It was a great opportunity against the second new ball, so tried to get as many as I could. And I managed to get the ball rolling.
Mitchell Starc: Pretty positive win. There was lots of outside noise after the game but we left Perth in Perth. Cannot really put my finger on it. [On his excellent record in Adelaide] Nothing changes in my approach. Probably slightly fuller lengths. It [the pink ball] is more like the white ball than the red ball. We were really positive with bat and ball and got the rewards. It’s nice when the ball hits the stumps. I have been learning a lot from Pat and Cummins over the last seven years or so. So I have added to my bow the one that goes away and still able to bring one back. I always had that air speed and swing but I have also been someone who leaked a bit. Developing the wobble seam helped me improve my accuracy over the years. To be able to have the longevity is putting that hard yards in that people don’t always see.
Match Review
Australia Dominates India in 2nd Test, Wins by 10 Wickets
In a one-sided encounter, Australia clinched a dominant 10-wicket victory over India in the 2nd Test of the series, held at Adelaide Oval from December 06–08, 2024. The Indian team struggled throughout the match, with both their batting and bowling units failing to deliver when it mattered most.
India’s Struggles with the Bat
India’s batting woes began early on Day 1. Opening batsmen KL Rahul and Shubman Gill fought hard, but the middle order soon faltered under pressure. India found themselves at 36/1 in 11 overs, with Rahul and Gill trying to stabilize the innings. However, once the 2nd wicket fell at 50 runs in the 15th over, the collapse began. By the time the Indian team reached 82/4, the match was already slipping away.
Rishabh Pant and Rohit Sharma’s dismissals put India in further trouble, leaving the middle and lower order to try and rescue the situation. India reached 100 runs in 30.4 overs, but it was clear that they were up against a formidable Australian bowling attack. The wickets kept falling as the Indian side could only manage a paltry 180 all out in 44.1 overs.
Australia’s Solid Start
Australia’s response was a patient one. Openers NA McSweeney and Marnus Labuschagne weathered early pressure and guided Australia to 38/1 by the end of Day 1. The Australian batting unit was steady on Day 2, with McSweeney and Labuschagne building valuable partnerships.
As Australia reached 100 runs in 39.6 overs, the momentum shifted in their favor. The star of the day was Travis Head, who played a sublime knock of 140 runs, anchoring Australia’s innings. With solid contributions from Steve Smith and Mitchell Marsh, Australia reached 337 runs, taking a commanding lead.
India’s Desperate Attempt in the 2nd Innings
India’s second innings began with an improved approach, but the Australian bowlers, led by Nathan Lyon, proved too difficult to handle. The Indian top-order once again struggled, and despite a gritty fight from Shubman Gill and Virat Kohli, the team found themselves at 128/5 by the close of Day 2.
As Day 3 progressed, India’s resistance crumbled. Review decisions went against them, and wickets continued to fall at regular intervals. Rishabh Pant and Ravichandran Ashwin fought to extend India’s innings, but ultimately, India were dismissed for 175 runs, falling short by 162 runs to avoid defeat.
Australia Wraps Up the Win
Australia needed just 19 runs in their second innings to win, and the task was completed with ease. The match ended with Australia’s victory by 10 wickets, marking a decisive performance in the series.
Key Performances
- Travis Head (Australia) was the standout performer, scoring a brilliant 140 in the first innings, leading Australia to a comfortable position.
- Nathan Lyon (Australia) played a pivotal role in India’s second innings, claiming key wickets and restricting India’s chances of recovery.
- Shubman Gill (India) top-scored in India’s second innings with 19 runs, showing brief signs of resistance amid a top-order collapse.
India’s Missed Opportunities
India’s performance in the match was marred by several missed opportunities, both in the batting and bowling departments. The inability to form substantial partnerships with the bat, especially in the top and middle order, proved costly. Additionally, despite commendable efforts from bowlers like Mohammed Shami and Ravindra Jadeja, India could not capitalize on the few chances they created.
Looking Forward
Australia’s victory has put them in the driver’s seat for the remainder of the series, while India must quickly regroup and address their weaknesses ahead of the next Test. The loss has raised questions over India’s batting resilience and their ability to combat Australia’s formidable spin attack, setting the stage for a thrilling conclusion to the series.
With the third Test on the horizon, India will need to find their rhythm if they are to bounce back and compete with the world’s best. Meanwhile, Australia will be eager to carry forward their winning momentum into the next match.
