Tiger Reserve Tirunelveli is a smaller regional zoo in Tamil Nadu, featuring native species such as tigers, and bears. Located in the heart of Tamil Nadu, Tiger Reserve Tirunelveli is home to a collection of native wildlife and offers a tranquil space for wildlife enthusiasts and families.

Key Facts

The Kalakad Mundanthurai Tiger Reserve (KMTR) in Tirunelveli and Kanyakumari District of Tamil Nadu is one of the protected areas having diverse flora and fauna.

KMTR was declared as the “First Tiger Reserve of Tamil Nadu” and the 17th Tiger Reserve of the country. Forests of this reserve has rich biodiversity and endemism.

KMTR consists of 895 sq.km of core area consisting of two adjacent sanctuaries namely Kalakad Wildlife Sanctuary, Mundanthurai Tiger Sanctuary in Tirunelveli District and part of Veerapuli and Kilamalai Reserve Forests in Kanyakumari District.

Kalakad Wildlife Sanctuary was established in 1976 primarily for the conservation of Lion Tailed Macaque.

For Kuthiraivetti rooms, only SUV / XUV type of vehicles are allowed due to the current condition of access road

How to Reach KMTR

1. By Road

• From Tirunelveli: The reserve is around 40 km from Tirunelveli town. You can hire a taxi or drive your vehicle via the Tirunelveli – Kalakad road.
• From Nagercoil: It’s approximately 80 km from Nagercoil. Take the Nagercoil – Kalakad road.
• From Trivandrum (Kerala): You can drive from Trivandrum (around 100 km) via Nedumangadu – Kanyakumari road and then head towards Kalakad.

2. By Air

• Nearest Airport (Trivandrum International Airport): The closest airport is Trivandrum International Airport (Thiruvananthapuram), around 95 km from the reserve. From there, you can take a taxi or hire a cab to reach Kalakad Mundanthurai.
• Tirunelveli also has a smaller airport (for domestic flights) but fewer options compared to Trivandrum.

3. By Train

• Nearest Railway Station (Tirunelveli): The nearest railway station is Tirunelveli Junction (around 40 km from the tiger reserve). You can take a taxi or bus from Tirunelveli station to reach the forest.
• From Nagercoil: Another option is Nagercoil Junction (about 75 km away), which is well-connected by trains to major cities like Chennai, Trivandrum, and Coimbatore.
