IPL 2025: All the Team Captains Officially Announced

With the 18th edition of the Indian Premier League coming up, the captaincy list is almost complete. A few still haven’t announced who will lead their teams yet, but fans are excited to see how those who were already confirmed captain will lead their teams to the final.

Many also wonder whether those franchises with unannounced captains will eventually confirm strong rumours, especially for teams like Royal Challengers Bangalore and Delhi Capitals.

Name List of the 2025 IPL Captains

IPL franchises typically announce their captains before the season starts, giving them enough time to prepare and strategise. The IPL sets no strict deadline for captain announcements, but it’s common practice for teams to announce their captains a few weeks before the tournament starts. That’s likely the case for teams like Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), and Delhi Capitals.

As of January 20, 2025, here are all the captains (rumoured and announced) for each IPL team:

Closer Look at the Team Captains for 2025 IPL

Based on the latest 2025 IPL betting odds from sporting news, some of the favourites to win are Mumbai Indians, Chennai Super Kings, Kolkata Knight Riders, Lucknow Super Giants, and Gujarat Titans. You can get the enhanced odds on IPL matches at 10CRIC, but here’s a closer look at the favourites so far:

Mumbai Indians: (6.00 odds)

Hardik Pandya is a proven captain with a winning record, leading the Gujarat Titans to victory in IPL 2022. His aggressive style and ability to inspire his team could be what MI needs to bounce back from a disappointing 2024 season. However, managing MI’s star-studded lineup and handling the pressure of expectations in a high-profile franchise might be a new challenge for him. If he can navigate these factors effectively, MI could be a strong contender.

Chennai Super Kings: (7.00)

There’s no denying that making Gaikwad the captain is a bold move for CSK. They’re putting their faith in a young and relatively inexperienced captain. Ruturaj is a talented batsman, but he must show strong leadership qualities and tactical acumen to guide a team in transition. This could be a rebuilding year for CSK if he and the rest of the team can deliver.

Kolkata Knight Riders: (7.50)

If the rumours are true, having Venkatesh Iyer as captain is another interesting choice. There is no doubt that he is a promising all-rounder, but his captaincy experience is limited. KKR might be looking to groom him for the future, but we can’t deny it can also be a risky move.

That said, how the team will perform will mostly depend on how experienced players like Andre Rusell and Sunil Narine can support him. KKR might be a bit unpredictable this season. After Shreyas Iyer, Venkatesh has big shoes to fill if he becomes captain.

Lucknow Super Giants: (8.00)

It has been confirmed that Rishabh Pant will be captaining LSG. Sanjeev Goenka, LSG’s owner, talked to Star Sports about this, and he said that this decision was made as soon as they got Pant during the auction.

Pant is not new to captaincy, as he’s done that with Delhi Capitals. His win percentage is at 54.65, and there’s a good chance he’ll do better than Rahul in helping LSG get past the playoffs.

Gujarat Titans (9.00)

No one would disagree with Shubman Gill being an incredibly talented batsman, and he’s only been the captain of GT since last season. It’ll be interesting to see if he can push his team towards the championship after coming so close to the final last year. Indeed, there’s pressure because Hardik Pandya, who he replaced as captain last year, led the team in 2022 when the GT won its first IPL title.

Summary

We’re still a few months away from the tournament, but the talks are getting louder. Some teams are also already back on the field to start preparing. For teams like RCB, rumours are strong about Kohli becoming captain again.

The 2025 edition of the IPL is set to start on March 21, 2025. The official fixtures have not been announced yet, but the final is scheduled for May 25, 2025, at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata.

Fans can watch the matches live on Star Sports. The tournament will be available on the JioCinema app and website for online streaming.
