In 1975, the United Nations declared March 8 as International Women’s Day. However, this day was celebrated for the first time in the United States and European countries in March 1911.
In 1908, female garment workers walked the streets of New York City to fight for better wages, shorter working hours and the right to vote. This became a basic idea for International Women’s Day. The struggle was led by the Socialist Party of America.
