Who Said What
Jordan Silk talking to Fox Cricket: Was the right man for the last ball on strike is the story. A couple of twos and I couldn’t get him away with that wide line, probably a blessing I got away and got Benny on strike. He has shown earlier in the competition that he is a quality ball-striker. It helps, have been there before, still feel the nerves in that situation, felt as long as I was there we could win. The feedback we got was early with the new-ball; it was holding a bit and it got better as the innings went on. Jack Edwards bowled some really good overs at the backend, put the clamps on. Was looking at north of 180 but to get them to 160 was really good. We Coogees have been in that dressing room for quite a while now, we have played multiple games, huge amount of trust in the guys and what they do. Hopefully they feel really part of it, we have been a successful franchise for a long time. I’m not from Coogee, I’m from Penrith. [on Henriques’ chirp that it was an easy two points this game] Unlike Moises, we tend to stay quiet generally before a game. [on Hosein] Fresh of being named the number one T20 bowler in the world, he was dominant with the ball last year, when we lost Sock [Steve O’Keefe] last year, feel we need to have him replaced and Akeal was the right choice.
Player of the Match
Ben Dwarshuis
Ben Dwarshuis | Player of the Match: You play the game to be in those moments. Silky and I were like – let’s just enjoy this and do our best. That was one of the better ones we’ve had. Was mishitting them well in the gaps. Nice to get a few out of the middle. Credit to Greeny who bowled a pretty good over, made us wait right to the last ball where he didn’t execute perfectly. Was just trying to stay really still. Watch and react, and trust my hands to get the job done. No rocket launcher, just a really nice bat. Was just trying to stand still and swing hard. Nice to connect a few. Was a bit disappointed with my first two overs. Nice to bounce back. The Surge is something we have identified as an area to improve on. To pick up those two wickets in the Surge was nice. Always is (a big game). Spoken a lot about the rivalry, and it means more than every other game. Nice to be able to win. Love beating them here on their turf.
Match Review
Sydney Thunder: Managed to score a competitive total of 163/5, thanks to a solid innings from Cameron Bancroft (70*) and Oliver Davies (47).Sydney Sixers: Chased the target with 164/5, sealing the win on the last ball of the match, with crucial contributions from Josh Philippe, Jack Edwards, and a quickfire 20* from Ben Dwarshuis.
Sydney Sixers (Winners) – Key Takeaways:
- Ben Dwarshuis’ All-Round Performance:
- Dwarshuis was the standout performer, earning Player of the Match honors with both bat and ball. His quickfire 20* off 8 balls under pressure and bowling figures of 2/26 ensured a narrow victory. His all-round contributions are a big positive for the Sixers moving forward.
- Balanced Bowling Attack:
- The Sixers’ bowlers, especially Akeal Hosein (2/23) and Dwarshuis, bowled with great control to restrict the Thunder to a par score. Despite some expensive overs from other bowlers like Joel Davies and Todd Murphy, they kept the game in check with crucial breakthroughs.
- Jordan Silk’s Finishing:
- Silk played a key role in the middle order, scoring a calm and composed 36* (25) when the game was in the balance. His experience and ability to finish off matches will be a key asset for the Sixers throughout the tournament.
- Strong Start to the Chase:
- The Sixers got off to a solid start with Josh Philippe and Jack Edwards setting the tone. Although there was a minor wobble in the middle overs, the team maintained composure to chase down the total off the last ball, which speaks to their ability to handle pressure.
Sydney Thunder (Losers) – Key Takeaways:
- Cameron Bancroft’s Form:
- Bancroft played a crucial knock, anchoring the innings with his unbeaten 70* off 52 balls. His form is a big positive for the Thunder, especially with other key players not firing consistently. Bancroft will likely be the backbone of the Thunder’s batting lineup.
- Middle-Order Fragility:
- Thunder’s middle order struggled to capitalize on the platform set by Bancroft and Oliver Davies (47). Sherfane Rutherford and Daniel Sams fell cheaply, and this inconsistency in the middle overs prevented the Thunder from posting a higher total.
- Bowling Under Pressure:
- The Thunder bowlers, especially Lockie Ferguson (2/32) and Daniel Sams (1/29), bowled well but were unable to defend 163. Chris Green and Nathan McAndrew were expensive, putting additional pressure on the team during key moments. The bowling attack will need to tighten up at the death in future games.
- Powerplay Struggles:
- The Thunder lost early wickets in the powerplay, including captain David Warner and Sam Konstas. Losing two early wickets put pressure on Bancroft and Davies to rebuild, and they need to address this top-order fragility to ensure better starts in upcoming matches.
Overall Takeaway:
The Sydney Sixers displayed excellent composure in a close chase, relying on their depth in both batting and bowling. Ben Dwarshuis’ all-round heroics and the contributions from the middle order were key. The Sydney Thunder, despite Bancroft’s brilliance, need to address middle-order consistency and improve death bowling to secure wins in future matches.
